Smart and Effective Rock Strata Monitoring

The RockTale is a unique electronic device that provides early warning of roof instability in underground mines. The device consists of two LED lights (blue and red) and provides warning of roof parting of as little as 3mm.

The RockTale is anchored to the upper portion of the hole to ensure that the sensitive trigger mechanisms function correctly when parting in the roof strata occurs.

The RockTale is equipped with two trigger anchors. The top trigger anchor may vary in distance according to the specific roof strata conditions and lithology.

The RockTale incorporates another indication. Once parting takes place, the roof moves downwards and over the reflective strips. A guide pin is also attached to ensure the Rock Tale is not installed too deep in the drilled hole.

Blue LED

The Blue LED light starts to flicker once parting occurs in the lower part of the roof strata.

The ‘lower trigger anchor’ then moves downwards along with the lower roof.

The inner piston with the blue reflective tape snaps outwards, which in addition to the flickering blue LED light is a visible indication of movement taking place and is now guaranteed to be easy identified with a headlamp.

Red LED

The Red LED light starts to flicker once parting occurs in the upper part of the roof strata.

The ‘upper trigger anchor’ then moves downwards along with the upper roof.

The outer piston with the red reflective tape snaps outwards, which in addition to the flickering red LED light is a visible indication of movement taking place and is now guaranteed to be easy identified with a headlamp.

The RockTale can be supplied in various lengths and as specified by the mine.
The ‘upper trigger anchor’ can be preset to a maximum distance of 2m from the bottom of the roof or hanging wall.
However, the lower trigger anchor is fixed to the lowest possible position.

RockTales with a length of more then 2m are priced accordingly and split to be easily transported and joined underground.

The RockTale can easily fit into a drilled hole with a minimum diameter of 23.5mm to a maximum diameter of 51mm.

The RockTale is a consumable product and cannot be re-used. Each RockTale comes with a unique serial number for quality purposes prior to delivery and after installation.

All RockTales are colour-coded and branded to easily identify the length range installed underground.
